The digital transition provides the opportunity to expand the transmission coverage area for all broadcasters. Some countries (Tanzania and Uganda) have offered signal carrier licences to a number of companies. These signal carrier companies are either private investors who sell the signal transmission service to several companies or are consortia of broadcasters who come together to share the cost of signal transmission. Whichever route is taken, it provides the opportunity to extend the signal transmission coverage area within a country so that more people can share the same television programmes.
